JACOB BALLAS

CHILDREN’S

GARDEN

1-before-in-B_W 2-after

Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden is the first, and currently the largest children’s garden in Asia, located within Singapore Botanic Gardens, a gazetted UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As the only children’s garden in Singapore, it is a common ground for local institutions and nurseries to collaborate and integrate outdoor learning experiences. It serves as a catalyst for empowering the young with the knowledge and ownership of their environment.

By combining the strengths of both Building Construction and specialisation in Structural Steel Works, Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden is one of DN Hybrid’s finished projects with Singapore National Parks Board. It has also attained both National and International recognition and awards.

As the project’s main Builder, the greatest challenge during the construction phase was the implementation of temporary access. The method adopted must minimise environmental impact, avoid affecting existing heritage structures and damaging native trees and its roots.

A traditional but non-conventional method, sandbags were used with steel plate to pave a temporary path for the machinery to pass through, was adopted.

With the right software and machinery, Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden’s complex steel structure was considered simple to design and fabricate, but not easy to install, especially amongst native trees and plants which are to be preserved.

DN Hybrid’s in-house workforce adapted to the environment and executed the works safely and productively using conventional methods when heavy pieces of machinery were non-deployable.

While working on the expansion, the rest of the garden remained open to the public. As such, with close collaboration between the client and vendors, DN Hybrid was able to execute the project in a diligent, safe, sustainable and productive manner. Topped with their positive attitude and their ability to adapt to any project environment, DN Hybrid demonstrated its strength in both Builder and Structural Steel Works.
